Your Vape Is Acting Up — Here's How to Actually Figure Out Why

There's nothing quite as frustrating as taking a pull from your setup and getting something that tastes like a campfire, smells like burnt plastic, and produces about as much vapor as a damp sock. Whether you're a seasoned vaper or still finding your footing, performance problems happen to everyone — and the instinct to immediately buy a new coil (or worse, a whole new device) isn't always the right move.
Before you spend a dime, let's actually diagnose what's going on. Most vaping issues trace back to one of four sources: the device, the coil, the e-liquid, or your technique. Walk through this guide systematically and you'll have a clear answer — and a clear fix — in under ten minutes.
Start With the Simplest Explanation First
This sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised how many people overlook the basics. Before diving into diagnostics:
- Check your juice level. Running low on e-liquid is the single most common cause of dry, burnt hits. If your tank or pod is below a quarter full, top it off and try again before doing anything else.
- Check your battery level. A low battery doesn't just affect power output — it can cause inconsistent firing, weak vapor, and muted flavor even when wattage appears correct.
- Check your connections. On mods and tanks, unscrew and re-seat the tank. Wipe the 510 connection pin on both the mod and the tank base with a dry cloth. Dirty or slightly misaligned connections cause all kinds of weird behavior.
If any of these fixes resolve your issue, great. If not, keep reading.
Troubleshooting Burnt or Harsh Hits
A harsh, burnt taste is the most common complaint vapers bring to forums and shops. The cause is almost always one of three things:
1. Dry coil / insufficient saturation This is the most likely culprit, especially if the issue started suddenly after a refill or with a brand new coil. The cotton wicking inside your coil needs to be fully saturated before you fire it.
Fix: If you just installed a new coil, let it sit for 5–10 minutes after filling. For pod systems, squeeze the pod gently a few times to encourage wicking. If you've been vaping for a while and it started tasting burnt, you may be chain vaping faster than the wick can re-saturate — slow down between hits and give it 20–30 seconds.
2. Coil that's past its prime Coils don't last forever. Sweeteners in e-liquid — especially dessert and candy flavors — leave behind a dark, gummy residue called coil gunk that insulates the coil and causes burning even when the wick is wet.
Fix: Pull out the coil and look at it. If the cotton is dark brown or black and the metal looks gunked up, it's done. Replace it. No amount of cleaning will fully restore a heavily gunked coil.
3. Wattage set too high Running more power than your coil is rated for is a fast track to burnt hits, especially with higher-resistance coils.
Fix: Check the side of your coil — most list a recommended wattage range. If you're above that range, drop your wattage down to the middle of the suggested range and work up slowly from there.
Troubleshooting Flavor That's Faded or Flat
This one's trickier because flavor degradation is gradual. You might not even notice it happening until you try a fresh coil and realize how much you've been missing.
Vaper's tongue is a real phenomenon where your taste receptors become desensitized to a flavor you've been vaping constantly. It's not a device problem — it's you.
Fix: Switch to a different flavor for a day or two, or take a break from vaping for a few hours. Smelling freshly ground coffee can help reset your palate faster. Staying hydrated matters too — dehydration dulls taste significantly.
Coil gunk doesn't just cause burning — in early stages, it mutes and distorts flavor before it starts tasting outright burnt.
Fix: Replace the coil. If you consistently go through juice quickly and gunk up coils fast, consider switching to a lower-sweetener juice to extend coil life.
Airflow settings have a bigger impact on flavor intensity than most vapers realize. Too much airflow dilutes vapor and washes out flavor.
Fix: Close your airflow down incrementally until you find the sweet spot. For flavor chasing, tighter airflow almost always produces a more concentrated taste.
Troubleshooting Weak or Thin Vapor Production
If your clouds have gone from satisfying to barely visible, here's where to look:
Low wattage is the obvious starting point. If your device is set lower than your coil's recommended range, vapor production will suffer.
Fix: Bump your wattage up gradually until you're in the middle of the coil's rated range.
Airflow too restricted can actually reduce vapor volume even while improving flavor. It's a balance.
Fix: Open your airflow slightly and see if vapor production improves without sacrificing too much flavor.
High-nicotine or salt nic juice in a sub-ohm device will produce thin vapor and a very harsh hit. Salt nic is designed for low-wattage pod systems, not high-power sub-ohm tanks.
Fix: Match your juice to your device. Sub-ohm tanks want freebase nicotine at 3–6mg. Pod systems and MTL setups are where salt nic shines.
Coil flooding causes gurgling sounds and weak, wet vapor. This happens when too much liquid gets into the coil chamber.
Fix: Remove the tank, cover the airflow holes with a paper towel, and blow firmly through the mouthpiece to clear excess liquid. Reassemble and try firing a few times at low wattage to burn off the remaining flood.
When It's Actually the Device
Most issues aren't device-level problems, but sometimes they are. Signs your device itself might be the issue:
- Inconsistent firing (works sometimes, doesn't other times)
- Error messages that persist after checking connections
- Battery draining significantly faster than usual
- Mod getting unusually hot during normal use
For regulated mods, a factory reset (check your manual — usually a button combination) can resolve firmware glitches. For pod systems with built-in batteries, if the device is more than a year old and performance has noticeably declined, the battery may simply be degraded. Many pod systems have non-replaceable batteries, which means the device has a finite lifespan.
The Diagnostic Shortcut
When something goes wrong, run through this quick mental checklist before reaching for your wallet:
- Is my tank full?
- Is my battery charged?
- Are my connections clean and secure?
- Is my coil new and properly primed?
- Are my wattage and airflow settings appropriate for my coil?
If you've confirmed all five and you're still having issues, then — and only then — start thinking about replacing a component. Most of the time, the fix is free and takes about two minutes. Work the checklist and save the spending for when it's actually necessary.
