There's a specific kind of frustration every intermediate vaper knows well: you install a brand-new coil, get excited about that clean, crisp flavor, and then two or three days later it's already tasting burnt and gunky. You've just dropped another few bucks on a replacement. Again. It's a cycle that feels almost unavoidable — but it's actually not. With a solid understanding of what's happening inside your coil and a few changes to your routine, you can realistically double or even triple how long each coil lasts while getting better performance out of it along the way.

What's Really Happening Inside a Coil
At its core (pun intended), a vape coil is a resistance wire wrapped around a wicking material — usually cotton, though ceramic and mesh variations exist. When current flows through the wire, it heats up, vaporizing the e-liquid saturated in the wick. Simple enough in concept, but the details matter enormously.
The wire material determines how the coil heats and how it interacts with your e-liquid over time. The most common materials you'll encounter are:
- Kanthal (FeCrAl): The workhorse of the coil world. Durable, affordable, and resistant to oxidation. Great for standard wattage mode vaping. Doesn't work well with temperature control.

The Number One Coil Killer: Improper Priming
If there's one mistake that destroys more coils than anything else, it's not priming them correctly before first use. When a dry wick gets exposed to heat, the cotton scorches almost instantly, and that burnt taste never fully goes away — it's baked into the fibers.
Here's how to prime a new coil properly:
- Apply e-liquid directly to the wick ports. Look at your coil — you'll see small holes or openings exposing the cotton. Use your e-liquid bottle to put 3 to 5 drops directly onto those exposed areas. For mesh coils, be a little more generous since the wick surface is larger.

The wick simply can't re-saturate fast enough to keep up with the heat being generated, and you get dry hits that degrade the cotton rapidly.

For most mesh sub-ohm coils, the sweet spot tends to be in the lower-to-middle portion of the rated range rather than the maximum. A coil rated 60 to 80 watts often performs beautifully at 65 to 70. You get good vapor production, solid flavor, and the coil isn't being pushed to its limits every single hit.
E-Liquid Choices That Affect Coil Life
This one surprises a lot of people: what you vape matters as much as how you vape.
VG/PG ratio: High-VG liquids (70/30 or higher) produce thicker clouds but are more viscous and wick more slowly. If you're running a high-VG juice at high wattage with quick, successive puffs, you're inviting dry hits. High-VG works great — just give your wick time to re-saturate between draws.

Nicotine salt liquids: Nic salts are generally smoother and gentler on coils than freebase nicotine at comparable strengths, but they're typically used in lower-wattage pod systems where coil replacement is already less frequent.
Cleaning and Maintenance: Yes, It's Worth It
Coil cleaning isn't talked about enough. While you can't fully restore a heavily gunked coil, you can extend the life of a coil that's starting to show early buildup.
For removable coils: Run warm water through the coil (not boiling — that can damage seals). Let it dry completely — and we mean completely, at least 24 hours — before reinstalling.
